Freeman Family Farm
1426 Juniata St, Pittsburgh, PA 15233

Project Description:
Serving as an anchor within Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood, the Freedom Family Farm store at 1426 Juniata Street is the City of Pittsburgh’s first and only brick-and-mortar farm store. The 1,866 GSF live/work building thoughtfully integrates a community-focused farm store at the ground floor with a two-bedroom, two-bathroom residence above; creating a compact model for combining local food access, housing, and community connection within a single urban infill project.
Founded and guided by Lisa Freeman, the Freeman Family Farmstore was established in response to the need for greater access to fresh, locally grown food within the community. More than a retail destination, the farm store serves as a neighborhood hub for food education, sustainable agriculture, and community engagement. The project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture and adaptive community development can support food justice while strengthening the social and economic fabric of the neighborhood—bringing together food, culture, housing, and community under one roof.
